ON TRACK

Committing to a longer period of mission service can be daunting for some, so Interserve’s On Track programme is designed to give you a taste of what Christian mission to the hard places can be like. At the same time you will be doing something extremely rewarding, and will be a blessing to those you have come to serve.

On Track placements are available anytime of the year, and from one month to one year. They are arranged on an individual basis depending on your specific areas of interest and/or expertise and skills. Whether you are interested in taking a gap year, your Great OE, or a career break; whether you have just graduated or are about to do a medical elective; or perhaps you’ve just retired – we can arrange something that is tailor-made for you.

What On Trackers do

As each On Track placement is individually tailored, there are no fixed rules on what On Trackers can do. Many do medical electives, while others may work in a fashion design company which employs destitute women, as teachers or social workers, with refugees or homeless people, or in engineering or administration – the list goes on and on. Whatever your skills may be, we can help you find a way to use them to serve the peoples of Asia and the Arab world.

If you are planning a gap year before university or your Great OE, are taking a year out between jobs, or have retired and would like to use your professional skills meaningfully in a different setting, then we would love to hear from you.

On Trackers can usually serve in any country of the Interserve world, and placements can be arranged anytime of the year, and from one month to one year. If you wish to serve for more than a year, please check out our exciting, new On Track Plus programme.

What is different

The difference between On Track and many other short-term mission programmes is that we focus on individually tailored, high quality placements. When you apply to the On Track programme we will do our best to find a placement that best suits your talents and abilities, ensuring that you are enabled to use all your gifts to serve God.

Who can go?

The On Track programme is open to almost anyone: if you are at least 18 years old, and not more than 75 (although we can be flexible on that one) then you can go On Track.

On Track is different from many other short-term mission programmes. On Trackers work in difficult conditions, and in challenging countries, with extreme weather conditions, a lack of Western comforts, and spiritual opposition all playing a part. Some On Trackers also feel challenged by the huge need that they see in the countries they come to serve, and struggle to see how they can make a difference. The On Track programme is challenging and stretching, so a strong Christian faith, personal flexibility, and a sense of humour are essential.

Married couples and families are very welcome to go On Track. Couples frequently serve on the On Track programme and this can be a good way to see if both of you feel called to longer-term cross-cultural mission work.

People with disabilities are more than welcome to apply to the On Track programme. Do bear in mind that parts of the Interserve world are very remote and Western comforts are often absent, so it is imperative to discuss this with Interserve upfront so that we can find a placement which best suits your particular situation.

It is also very important to have the support of your church or Christian faith community. Interserve works with the local church in everything we do, so we will contact your Christian leadership to ensure that they support your plans to work cross-culturally with the On Track programme.

How to apply

To apply for an On Track placement, please contact us by phone on 0800 446 464 or by email. Please note that, ideally, you will need to complete your application at least four months before your intended departure date, due to the time needed to locate a suitable placement.

Cost guidelines

The cost of an On Track placement varies a lot according to its duration and location. Interserve charges a fee of $60 for each application. Then there are other fees that contribute to the costs of selection, screening, medical clearance, orientation, debriefing, pastoral care, and locating a suitable placement. On Trackers are expected to raise their own living costs, as well as the funds for flights, accommodation, vaccinations, insurance and visas. Please contact us to learn more.

On Track experiences

The best way to find out about the On Track programme is from people who have been on it! If you would like to talk to a former On Tracker about their experiences, please contact us and we will do our best to arrange a a personal meeting – a chat over a cup of coffee, or an ethnic lunch maybe?!
